Sporting Clay Courses

Sporting Clays is the fastest-growing and most exhilarating clay target sport out there. Often called “golf with a shotgun,” every sporting clays course is unique, featuring varied terrain and target presentations designed to keep shooters on their toes. At ASC, we take it a step further by regularly modifying our courses, ensuring that each visit offers fresh and exciting challenges.

Course Layout & Shooting Experience

Our Sporting Clays course is divided into 10 to 15 shooting “Stations,” each offering its own distinct set of target presentations that mimic the flight patterns of birds or the movement of ground game. You’ll shoot in squads of up to six people, moving together from station to station. Whether you’re a seasoned shooter or a complete beginner, you have the flexibility to choose which stations to shoot—there’s no pressure to complete them all.

  • Rounds & Duration:
A typical 50-target round takes around an hour, while a 100-target round will take approximately two hours—similar to choosing between 9 or 18 holes of golf. Don’t worry if you’re short on time or stamina; you can tailor your experience based on your preferences.

  • Convenience:
Golf-style carts are available for rent, but if you prefer to walk the course, you’re welcome to do so. Either way, you’ll get to enjoy the full experience while navigating from station to station.

Starting Your Experience

Everything kicks off at our Sporting Clays Pro Shop, where you can purchase your targets and pick up any additional gear you need—such as eye and ear protection, available for purchase if you don’t have your own. From here, our friendly staff will get you set up and ready to shoot.

Equipment and Ammunition

All gauges of shotguns are welcome, but 12-gauge and 20-gauge are the most popular choices. All shooting is done “from the shoulder,” so no tactical or “riot-type” shotguns are permitted. As for ammunition, we recommend traditional target or small game loads. Shot sizes larger than 7 ½ lead or #7 steel are not allowed due to shot fall limitations, and 3-inch shells are also prohibited.

Safety & Station Setup

Safety is paramount at ASC. All firearms must be carried unloaded and with actions open as you move from station to station. You’ll only load your firearm once you’re inside the designated shooting cage and ready to shoot. Each station is equipped with gun racks, benches, and water coolers for your comfort.

Target Presentations

Each station features two clay target machines (traps) positioned to present unique target “presentations” that replicate the flight patterns of real birds. With the press of a button, you can release either target individually or both simultaneously, depending on your shooting preference. If shooting alone – we have you covered. Each station can be set to throw clays on a delay, so there’s no hassle, just fun and enjoyment.

Game Play & Rules

Shooters usually rotate who goes first at each station, and the first shooter is entitled to view a “Show Pair” of targets to understand the flight path. Once ready, the shooter will step into the cage, call “Pull!” and take aim. Shooters can choose to shoot the targets in any order they prefer, making each round a test of strategy and skill.

Additional Rules to Note:

  • Only two shells may be loaded at a time.
  • If you break both targets with a single shot, they both count as hits.
  • Up to three gun malfunctions are allowed before losing targets.
  • Chokes or guns may be changed between stations if desired.

Preparation & Pro Tips

Comfortable clothing, walking shoes, and mandatory eye and ear protection are required for all participants and spectators. Beverages (non-alcoholic), sunscreen, and any other comfort items are optional but recommended.
